Safer Space @ Buckingham Place,BOUNCING BACK WITH A SMILE!
Believe in Sri Lanka is the motto behind our small, friendly, hideaway-hotel
it drives everything we do!
As we welcome our guests at a challenging time our motto is more relevant than ever, but while a pandemic necessarily changes how we do things, some things will never change. Our hearts are as big and our smiles just as real, regardless of any protocols we must abide by.
50 Sri Lankans and an Englishman who has believed in Sri Lanka for many years, invite you to come and see for yourself – that we’re as hospitable and caring as we’ve always been, since our opening in 2010.
Having met the criteria of Sri Lankan Tourism Development Authority and Ministry of Health external auditors (KPMG), Buckingham Place is designated a Safe and Secure Level 1 Hotel and as such, is permitted to host overseas travelers who abide by mandatory protocols. Nonetheless, Buckingham Place remains an idyllic escape – a place to relax, unwind, enjoy nature and provide, everlasting fond memories.
Although one of three Sri Lankan hotels to achieve Trip Advisors highest award last year, ‘Travelers Choice Best of Best Top Small Hotels – World’ it hasn’t gone to our heads and we haven’t stopped trying! Expect somewhere different, a place where hospitality comes straight from the heart…
What about the Pandemic?
Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority/Ministry of Health operational guidelines have been adapted to suit operations of this hotel. The hotel in-house Safer Space guidelines are our ‘go to’ for keeping everyone as safe as possible but with minimal inconvenience. Preparation began before we reopened, reassessment and change will be ongoing.
We are as bored with the pandemic as you are but because our work includes frequent guest interactions, we aim for 2m physical-distancing and wear our face masks with pride!
Buckingham Place is well suited to these times, with only 16 well-spaced spacious bedrooms and suites and an open-air restaurant. For added peace of mind we restrict occupancy and space restaurant chairs 2 meters or more apart. We encourage long stays and as before, operate a Reservations Only policy, while remembering this is a hotel not a quarantine centre!
Wear a facemask near other guests and us
Observe 2m meters distancing
Use the feet sanitizing matts
Sanitize/wash hands frequently in shared areas
Undergo temperature check
Tell us about current health & recent travel
Understand we are obliged to keep records of guest visits
Restrict your whereabouts to the hotel and the beach in front of the hotel
Respect… new-normal is new to us too!
A key objective of Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (and Buckingham Place) is to keep you and our communities safe. During your holiday, the aim is to protect everyone from each other and for you to have a really special, hassle free holiday.
Is Buckingham Place open and if so, how do we make a reservation?
Yes we are, simply click on 5 SIMPLE STEPS and BOOK NOW buttons on this website.
Is Buckingham Place a safe & secure hotel?
Yes, but it is NOT a quarantine hotel and is famous for making its guests smile!!
Do we pay for our stay in advance?
Not unless you wish to, an email is just fine.
How many PCR tests will I need?
If you are fully vaccinated, none at all unless your airline and/or home destination requires one. If they do, we can arrange for one to be constructed for USD40 at the hotel, just let us know in good time.
How do you price your accommodation?
Bedrooms/suites are priced assuming the maximum of two occupants sharing a king-size double bed. A la carte breakfast for two is included, as are local taxes and service. Several Bedrooms/Suites can accommodate 1-2 single beds (by arrangement) at an extra charge of £20 per person per night (kids 5-12yrs free) at point of reservation. Whether single or double occupancy the overnight rate remains the same.
Do you include meals in your accommodation rates?
Meals other than breakfast are charged separately. However, we offer per-person/per day half and full board options at £29 and £19 / (kids 5-12yrs, £12 / £5) respectively. Guests may choose a boarding option after sampling our cuisine, but for guidance most prefer to pay as they go as our kitchen tends to be generous.
How do we pay our restaurant and bar bills?
At the hotel as you go or, at agreed intervals by Visa/MasterCard or cash (Sri Lankan Rupees).
Can our relatives/friends visit us at the hotel?
Yes, providing they don’t mind showing us their vaccination certificate as proof of being fully vaccinated – sorry this is a strict government requirement i.e., NO exceptions!
Can we cancel our reservation in the event of unforeseen events?
Yes. If you must cancel we ask only that you please notify us as early as possible, preferably more than 72 hours before you are due to arrive. Subject to government exchange control rules, if you have paid in an amount in advance we need only to deduct bank charges. Please note; international transfers from Sri Lanka are notoriously slow as they must be approved by The Exchange Controller.
How do we get to the hotel from the airport?
If you are travelling independently we can arrange this on your behalf. Alternatively, if you book your holiday through a travel agent they will make arrangements automatically.
- BIA Colombo to hotel (c2 hours 45 mins) £60 for up to 5 passengers.
- MRIA Hambantota to hotel (45 mins) £37 for up to 5 passengers.
Is it necessary to book excursions before we arrive at the hotel?
No, these are easily arranged after arrival. You do need to book your transfer from the airport to the hotel before you arrive, if you are travelling independently of a travel agency.
Are we allowed to use public or self-drive transport?
Currently no. You are not allowed to use buses, trains, informal taxis, tuk-tuks (motorized rickshaw / 3 wheeler) or rent motorcycles or self-drive vehicles.
We have been vaccinated, do we need to undergo PCR tests?
No, providing you were fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to travel and can show official proof (in English) on landing and at your hotel.
Do we need to undergo PCR tests prior to travelling to Sri Lanka?>
Yes. Prior to boarding your flight you’ll be required to produce a negative PCR ‘Fit to Fly’ certificate in English from an accredited laboratory, of a test taken within 72 hours prior to flight departure.
Must we undergo a PCR test prior to departure from Sri Lanka?
This will depend on boarding requirements of your airline, your transit country (if applicable) and final destination. You may need to produce a PCR test report before embarkation hence you are advised to check with relevant authorities well before arriving for your departure flight.
What happens if we test positive for covid-19 while on holiday?
Your hotel / we, will liaise with a designated doctor and if necessary, local health authorities will admit you to a private hospital, one approved by the Ministry of Health. Mandatory COVID-19 Insurance (purchased for USD12 when applying for ETA/visa) will reimburse hospital charges (including ambulance transfer) up to USD 50,000 for a month. Non-symptomatic COVID-19 positive guests will be quarantined in an isolated area of the hotel under supervision of the designated hotel doctor and local health authorities. Close contacts may be kept under quarantine in an isolated area under supervision and administration of the hotel doctor and local health authorities. However, based on the decision of the hotel doctor/local health authorities, if they are sent to a quarantine hotel/center or private hospital, the COVID-19 Insurance will reimburse charges, including ambulance transfer.
Do we need to wear masks at the hotel?
Not unless you wish to, but it is assumed you will be sensitive to those who do choose to and our team, whose members are in frequent guest contact and are required to by Ministry of Tourism protocols.
What precautions are the hotel taking to protect us?
They are mainly back of house, but protocols immediately noticeable are typical of those found elsewhere. The team wear face masks and items of PPE relevant to role, and follow procedures to keep you, themselves and our community safe.
Safety is always paramount here… but we try to meet challenge sensitively and with common sense. Guests and members of our team must feel safe and be safe, but we must also be happy and fulfilled, and live as normally as possible. When we welcome you we will explain current measures we’re taking.
Safer Space… Buckingham Place is a small hotel with 16 bedrooms and suites. To easily manage protocols, we limit occupancy of the hotel and its restaurant, sanitise and leave accommodation standing empty for as long as possible between departing/arriving guests.
Dining… You can reserve a regular table at Oceanfront if you wish, our spacious open-air ocean-facing restaurant. Unless it rains heavily which is rare, doors and blinds are kept open to allow the sea breeze to circulate and keep us cool. You may dine next to swimming pools under the stars or on your veranda or balcony. Before mealtimes, restaurant chairs are spaced 2m or more apart – in some cases much further.
Meals are prepared to order as always, buffets have never been our style…
